2008 - A Summary

As the Cargo Focal Point for AMLA, it is incumbent upon me to strive for continuous improvement in the services we offer and to promote these services to you our membership. Since its inception, AMLA has grown in popularity and the number of members has risen exponentially to take advantage of the benefits contained within the agreement. From a starting point of 8 founding members we have reached a point where over 30 companies have become Parties to the agreement and have over a period of time been either a ‘Sharer’ or a ‘Recipient’.

There are three main measurements used to identify our successes and I am pleased to say that they make pretty good reading.

Earnings – These are the fees paid by the recipient to the sharer for delivering their cargo via an AMLA share. During 2008, total earnings reached £335,169
Savings – This is the estimated savings achieved through sharing a vessel as opposed to chartering a vessel to carry out the urgent delivery. During 2008, savings were well over the £1 million mark at £1,129,829
CO2 Emissions – This is the amount of CO2 that was not released into the atmosphere because a share occurred thereby removing the need for a vessel to transit to and from the locations and the average diesel that would have been burned in doing so. The reduction in CO2 emissions is 1,150 tonnes for the year to date.

When we put a share in place the above benefits need to be taken into account. The sharer earns a fee that can be used to offset operating costs thus reducing the overall logistics costs for that company. The recipient will benefit from not having to charter a vessel and the estimated savings achieved will reflect favorably on their monthly logistics figures. As we can see from the above bullet points, a total of £1,464,998 was earned or saved by the group during 2008.

In addition to the financial benefits, there is a hidden benefit in the reduction of Carbon Dioxide [CO2] emissions that has the potential to have a significant impact on our environment and is therefore a worthy goal to set the group. This year we have seen a saving of 1,150 tonnes and this is an area where I should like to see greater savings since the benefit gained is one that we all share in.

It is my intention to continue improving the services that we provide and to promote AMLA to our existing members and to encourage new members thus increasing the pool of Sharers and Recipients through which all earnings and savings are achieved.
